Rihan came from a guy in Seattle who had been caring for the vessel for about 4 years. He was connected to a martial arts studio in North Seattle. He says he was asked to care for the vessel by an elder in his community who had chosen him because he needed a "tough" caregiver. Rihan needs to be cared for by someone he can respect. Harder than it sounds, as he is one of the Kyoto Yōkai. The Kyoto Yōkai (京妖怪, Kyō-yōkai) is a yakuza yōkai group originating in Kyoto which has existed for at least 400 years. These are basically gangsters who have sworn a blood oath to remain gangsters and are not allowed to pass on due to that oath. He is a tough guy. A killer. And loyal to his oath. He lived in Kyoto, Japan and he died in 1956. He was part of an elite smuggling ring that involved everything from people to ancient artifacts. One of his jobs was to protect secrets, and he does that very well. He doesn't ever name names or places. He will talk politely and answer questions that we ask, but there is a definite line in the sand that he doesn't allow us to cross. We are not his people, and he lets us know that. Rihan is high maintenance in the sense that he requires lots of altar space, similar to that of a real Japanese cemetery: he needs a plate with sand or crystals in it, and he likes a small stick of incense to be burnt at least once a week as an offering to his ancestors, and to other yakuza yokai entities. He is never alone. Being with him feels a lot like you have invited a bunch of Japanese gangsters into your home and yes, you better walk on eggshells because you MUST show respect and be careful of what you allow in HIS space. For this reason, I strongly suggest you place him near the front of the house (feng shui), with at least 5 feet of space around him, away from other spirits and from high-traffic areas. We get lots of sword sounds, the clicking of old weaponry, fast-moving shadows, and long shadows that look like swords, knives, and other weaponry. We get the smell of incense when none is burning, we get the sound of men murmuring. We get a TON of activity with this guy. There is a sense of him wanting to be "in on the fight" and really missing the action of his life. When you communicate with Rihan, if you are respectful and show him that you are aware of his importance, then he will answer your questions very thoroughly, businesslike almost. There is always the feeling of being an outsider because we are not Yakuza and also not male. He speaks way more and more casually, with my husband, and only if I am not in the room. Mike thinks he longs for the brotherhood of his group. We have had men here and he does really well with them - he has straight up told me that I am not welcome in his space and there is a feeling of him being kind of angry that I would dare try to talk to him alone, "without my chaperone or husband". So yes, we are dealing with an old-fashioned male spirit with foreign customs. I feel like it will be very hard to find the right home for him due to his rather patriarchal views and blatant sexism. But I do feel like every spirit has a match out there and someone will be the right caregiver for him. He does very well with the pendulum and the PSB7, Ouija is OK he can speak a bit of English. He is not a typical guy and every day of his life before he died and after, he has chosen violence. So be sure that you are ok with living with a man of his ilk.
About the doll: He is a large porcelain vessel on a square base. He is bigger than he looks. His base is his stand.

FYI: In my old shop, we had to have a disclaimer explaining that haunted items were "for entertainment purposes only" and this disclaimer is needed for some credit card processors as well - However, you need to know, as a potential buyer/adopter that I am NOT responsible for any paranormal activity that you might experience in your home once you adopt a spirit. This is serious and many people who do not know what they are doing have had some pretty overwhelming experiences usually due to their own lack of knowledge or understanding about what it means to be a spirit keeper. As a seller, I will repeat, there are NO REFUNDS on haunted dolls - I will not guarantee that you will have the same experiences as I have had. but if you know your stuff, do your research, and are prepared for anything, then you will!
